History
The ensemble developed over a century. Its museums opened in stages, and their collections later became public.
- 1822The Altes Museum was planned to house the royal Antikensammlung.
- 1830The Altes Museum opened as the Königliches Museum.
- 1841Frederick William IV dedicated the island to art and science, and the Altes Museum was renamed.
- 1859The Neues Museum opened.
- 1876The Alte Nationalgalerie opened to house 19th-century art donated by banker Joachim H. W. Wagener.

- 1910–1930The Pergamon Museum was built.
