History

The buildings were laid out as imperial stables in 1725. The stables once housed up to 600 horses and 200 carriages. A two-stage competition drew 88 project entries, and Ortner & Ortner won the second stage by unanimous jury decision. In 1993 more than 140 art historians and architects protested against the project, including Ieoh Ming Pei and Sir Ernst Gombrich. In 1994 mayor Helmut Zilk decided against a planned reading tower. The total conversion cost was about 150 million euros.

  1. 1713Emperor Karl VI commissioned Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to design an imperial stable building.
  2. 1922The buildings were converted into the Messepalast.
  3. 1940–1945Propaganda events of the NS regime took place in the Messepalast.
  4. 1998Renovation of the former stables began in April 1998.
  5. 2001The site opened in two stages, on 29 June 2001.
