History

Knights of the Order of Saint-Jean de Jérusalem built the castle on a former island at the harbour entrance. The order took over the island in 1314, and building began around 1377 under Jean Fernandez de Heredia. The builders reused ruins from the Asklepieion and the ancient city as building material. Later restoration removed most later traces to highlight the medieval character of the castle.
