History
Before the cable car opened, the only access to the Ngong Ping area was a mountain road and bus service. The single road link, Tung Chung Road, could no longer cope with tourist traffic. Construction roads were banned in the park, so mules carried much of the material up the slopes. A safety halt during a 2006 trial run left 500 volunteers trapped for two hours. After a week of free trial runs for 40,000 visitors, the cable car reopened officially on 31 December 2007.
- 2000The government invited bids to run and maintain a link between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping.
- 2003Leitner, a cable-transport company, was contracted to build the cable car.
- 2004Construction started, and fog, monsoon weather and unstable ground slowed the work.
- 2006The cable car opened, linking Tung Chung with the Ngong Ping plateau.
- 2007An empty cabin fell during a brake test, and service stopped for six months.
