History
Nidaros Cathedral was built over the grave of Olav Haraldsson, the king who fell at Stiklestad in 1030 and brought Christianity to Norway. His grave became one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Northern Europe. Building of a stone church began in 1070, and the cathedral was substantially complete around 1300. Fires in 1328 and 1531 badly damaged it. A fire in 1708 burned it down to its stone walls.
- 1030Olav Haraldsson falls at the battle of Stiklestad. His grave later becomes the centre of the cathedral.
- 1070Building of a larger stone church begins over the grave.
- 1152The bishop's seat is raised to archbishopric, and the church becomes the cathedral of the archbishops.
- 1300The cathedral is substantially complete after a building period of about 230 years.
- 1537After the Reformation, the cathedral becomes part of the Church of Norway.
