History
Artur Hazelius founded the museum and began collecting objects in 1872 to preserve folk culture. Its original plan called for four wings around a courtyard, but funding and time reduced the project.

- 1880The collection took the name Nordic Museum and became a foundation of the Swedish people.
- 1888Construction began on the present building, designed by Isak Gustaf Clason.
- 1897The north wing was ready for the art and industry exhibition on Djurgården.
- 1907The full museum building was inaugurated.
