History

The hill’s slopes drew bison herds and people during winter. Tipi rings, ancient tool-making stations, a stone cairn and traces of old bison kills remain as evidence of past use. Peigan people probably left most of the more recent archaeological sites.

  1. December 1779Hudson’s Bay Company trader Peter Fidler visited the hill with Peigan guides.
  2. 1787–1788David Thompson wintered at a Peigan encampment on the Bow River; he noted the hill again in 1800.
  3. By 1879Bison herds had vanished from Nose Hill.
  4. 1969Cattle grazing ended on the hill.
  5. 1971Vehicle traffic ceased on parts of the hill.
