History
Repairs followed in the mid-17th century.
- 1357Construction began during Emperor Charles IV’s reign, soon after the foundation stone for Charles Bridge was laid.
- 14th c.The tower was conceived as a fortification and a ceremonial gateway for Czech kings’ coronation processions. Peter Parléř’s workshop built it alongside the bridge.
- 1621Heads of executed noble rebels were displayed on the tower.
- 1648Swedish forces damaged the tower during the siege of Prague.
- 1650–1653Carlo Lurago and Giovanni Spinetti repaired the damaged side.

- 1874–1878Josef Mocker led a major restoration that gave the tower its present roof.
- 1972Six original sandstone statues were removed and replaced by replicas.
