History
The sanatorium combined regional architectural motifs with new building methods. Its design drew on the English Arts and Crafts movement and emphasized functional room sizes and proportions. It was among Graubünden’s first reinforced steel-concrete buildings, with a flat roof, floor heating and advanced sanitary installations. The building retains its appearance from around 1900. Its dining room and lobby still look much as they did a century ago. Food lifts connected the main kitchen to all three floors, with plate warmers to keep meals hot.
- 1898–1900Hotel Schatzalp was built as a sanatorium by Zürich architects Otto Pfleghard and Max Haefeli. Willem Jan Holsboer initiated and founded the project.
- 1900The Schatzalp Sanatorium opened on 21 December.
- 1953–54The building began operating as Hotel Schatzalp.
