History

Carlo Lorenzini, who wrote Pinocchio under the pen name Collodi, spent his childhood in the village that gave him the name. Building went on for about thirty years, from 1956 to 1987. A museum-library for Pinocchio editions was planned but never built as first designed. The park is run and owned by the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi. A 2026/27 programme marks the bicentenary of the birth of Carlo Lorenzini.

  1. 1951Mayor Rolando Anzilotti set up a committee to build a monument to Pinocchio.
  2. 1953A national competition for the monument drew 84 sculptors; Greco and Venturi shared the top prize.
  3. 1956A traditional park of holm oaks was built around a paved square, and the large bronze sculpture group was inaugurated.
  4. 1972The second phase opened after slow work for lack of funds; the Pays de jouets was built the same year.
  5. 1986The Laboratory of words and pictures was added, built to a design by Carlo Anzilotti.
