History

Scherrer was a textile merchant, traveller and art lover. His garden brings buildings, plants, water, sculptures and views together as a unified landscape. Palms, cedars, cypresses, bamboo, magnolias, camellias, camphor trees, oleanders and citrus grow in the garden. Mediterranean and subtropical plants have acclimatised here over nearly a century.

  1. 1930Hermann Arthur Scherrer bought an old house, a stable and terraced land above it. He rebuilt the house with materials from an old home in Lugano’s Sassello quarter and began transforming the terraces.
  2. 1930–1956Scherrer transformed a former vineyard into a garden.
  3. 1956Scherrer died in 1956; the Nefertiti temple holds his and his wife’s funerary urns.
  4. 1965His wife Amalia sold the villa and garden to Morcote on condition that the garden open to the public. It has been open since then.
