History

The site once formed part of Barcho, the Visconti ducal park, which the Sforza later expanded and enclosed. After their fall, the estate was abandoned; the site later served as a military parade ground. During the Napoleonic era, Giovanni Antonio Antolini proposed a complex around the castle that was never built.

  1. 1861Part of the former ducal park was allocated to agriculture.
  2. 1888–1894The present park was laid out to Emilio Alemagna’s design and opened in 1893.
  3. 1894 and 1906The park hosted Milan International Exhibitions.
  4. 1951–1952A two-seat chairlift opened for the IX Triennale and was removed the following year.
  5. 1954Two Triennale pavilions were erected; they later became Biblioteca al Parco and Bar Bianco.
