History

The project drew on English garden cities. Gaudí adapted paths and terraces to the hillside, using retaining walls and materials found on site.

  1. 1899–1902Eusebi Güell acquired the estates for a planned residential development.
  2. 1900–1914Antoni Gaudí designed and built the park for Güell as a luxury residential development. It failed after only two plots were sold.
  3. 1906–1925Gaudí moved into the former show home with his father and niece and lived there until 1925.
  4. 1922Barcelona bought the park complex.
  5. 1926The grounds opened to the public as a municipal garden.
