History

Originally called Parque da Liberdade, the park occupies the former open grounds of Pedreira de São Sebastião. It was conceived as a green extension of Avenida da Liberdade, restoring public green space lost to the avenue. The park was named in honour of Edward VII following his visit to reaffirm the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance. Pavilhão Carlos Lopes honours the winner of the 1984 Olympic marathon.

  1. 1922The pavilion that became Pavilhão Carlos Lopes served as Portugal’s pavilion at the Rio de Janeiro International Exposition.
  2. 1933Estufa Fria opened.
  3. 1942Francisco Keil do Amaral designed the park’s current layout.
  4. 1950Four monumental columns designed by Francisco Keil do Amaral were erected.
  5. 1997João Cutileiro’s Monumento ao 25 de Abril was inaugurated.
