History

The park was first called Parque del Oeste, meaning Western park, a name based on hygiene studies by Emilio Coni. It was later renamed in honour of General José de San Martín, who led the Argentine War of Independence. Its creation sparked political controversy between governing and opposition politicians. The landscape architect Carlos Thays designed it in a mix of English and French 19th-century styles. He also designed Sarmiento Park and Parque Tres de Febrero. Over time the park improved air quality and raised nearby property values.

  2. 1896Law No. 19 creates the park. Carlos Thays is commissioned to design it.
  3. 1906The artificial lake opens. It serves as a water reservoir and for boating.
  4. 1909Gates from a Glasgow foundry go up at the main entrance, topped with a condor. Juan Molina Civit builds the regatta club on the lake shore.
  5. 1940sMajor renovations led by Daniel Ramos Correas redesign the park entrance.
