History

Alpine folding bent the rock layers into the Warnberg Saddle. As the terrain rose, the Partnach eroded softer layers and cut into the harder limestone. Timber was marked with its owner's Hausmarch and carried downstream by spring meltwater; freeing jammed trunks could be fatal.

  1. TriassicSofter marls accumulated about five million years after the limestone; these layers are called Partnach Strata.
  2. 18th centuryResidents carried firewood from the Reintal to Partenkirchen along timber-floating paths through the gorge.
  3. 1912The gorge became a natural monument and opened to visitors.
  4. 1960sTimber floating through the gorge ended.
  5. 1991A rockfall at the southern end blocked the old path and watercourse. Nobody died, and the Partnach diverted around the fallen boulders, forming a small natural reservoir.
