History
Borough engineer Harry W Smith planned the gardens in Japanese style. Japanese-style statues came from Killerby Hall, and exotic plants were imported from the French Riviera. Lottery funding later restored the pagoda, Half-Moon Bridge and gardens. Restoration also removed lake-bottom silt to restore the water capacity needed for the lake to function.
- 1911Land was bought from farmland and allotments for a public park.
- 1912The park opened and hosted galas, displays and exhibitions.
- 1924The park expanded to include Peasholm Glen.
- After the Second World WarThe model fleet was replaced, and the reenacted battle became the Battle of the River Plate.
- 1999The park closed after vandals set fire to its pagoda.
