History
During the Second World War, many collection pieces were moved to safety, while rooms containing monumental works were sealed.
- 1698The Antiquities Collection began with an acquisition by a Roman archaeologist.
- 1830Part of the Antiquities Collection became publicly accessible when the Altes Museum opened.
- 1897–1899Fritz Wolff built the first museum building.
- 1901Emperor Wilhelm II inaugurated the first museum building.
- 1907–1909Alfred Messel designed a replacement based on Wilhelm von Bode’s idea. Ludwig Hoffmann took over after Messel died in 1909.

- 1910–1930Ludwig Hoffmann built the replacement in simplified form, following Messel’s plans and commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm II.
