History
Stanislas Leszczyński, former King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, intended the square to honour his son-in-law Louis XV and prepare Lorraine’s people for their future ruler. Its plan brought civic services and entertainment venues together where two major routes crossed. The north–south route linked the Ducal Palace to the new town hall through a triumphal arch.
- 1751Stanislas presented his plan for a square linking Nancy’s medieval old town and its 16th-century new town.
- 1752–1755Emmanuel Héré designed the square and its surrounding buildings. Construction ran from March 1752 to November 1755 and required 400 workers at a time.
- 1755The square opened on 26 November. Guibal and Cyfflé unveiled their statue of Louis XV.
- 1759Stanislas gave the square, Place de la Carrière and the Pépinière to Nancy’s municipality.
- 1792The original statue of Louis XV was removed.
