History

Another possible origin of Papagayo is a Portuguese term for a fish caught locally. Playa de la Cruz takes its name from a well within an archaeological site. Playa de la Cera and Papagayo share former bunkers converted into dining establishments.

  1. 1402Jean de Béthencourt and Gadifer de la Salle built a fortification at Rubicón.
  2. Middle AgesThe peninsula contains medieval remains from the San Marcial del Rubicon site.
  3. Late 16th centuryTorriani’s map of the island shows the name Papagayo.
  4. 16th centuryOne explanation links the beach group’s name to El Papagayo, a pirate ship sunk offshore.

  • On footFollow the coastal path. From Playa Blanca harbour, start where the promenade ends at Playa de las Coloradas.
