History
The bridge was planned under governor Hercílio Luz as the first fixed link between the island and the mainland. Construction began in 1922. The American Bridge Company built it with engineers Robinson and Steinman, using materials brought from the United States. The governor died in 1924, before the bridge was finished. It opened in 1926 and ended the island's isolation and its reliance on the ferry. It closed completely again in 1991. It was placed under heritage protection in 1997, and after a full restoration it reopened to traffic in 2020.
