History
The palace stood among the port, shipyards, Casa da Índia and offices administering Portugal’s colonies. The rebuilt square’s new name, Praça do Comércio, reflected its commercial role, with customs and port administration offices in the surrounding buildings. It served as a car park until the 1990s, then became a venue for cultural events and performances.
- 1511King Manuel I moved his residence from Castelo de São Jorge to Paço da Ribeira, completed that year.
- 1 December 1640The old square saw the end of the Iberian Union, including the arrest of the Duquesa de Mântua and the killing of Miguel de Vasconcelos.
- 1755The earthquake, tsunami and fire destroyed Paço da Ribeira and much of the lower city; the palace’s 70,000-volume library was lost. The palace was not rebuilt, and the site became part of Pombaline Downtown.
- 1775Joaquim Machado de Castro’s equestrian statue of José I was inaugurated at the square’s centre.
- 1875The eastern tower and Rua Augusta arches were completed.
