History

Construction began in 1475 as an ornamental entrance. After damage in the Battle of Prague and the removal of its decorations in 1799, Josef Mocker led its neo-Gothic restoration from 1878 to 1886. The tower had stored gunpowder in the 17th century, giving it its name.

  1. 1475Vladislav II laid the foundation stone for an ornamental city entrance rather than a defensive tower. Work began under master mason Václav and later passed to Matyáš Rejsek of Prostějov.
  2. Construction haltedVladislav II had to relocate during riots, and work stopped. The unfinished tower had only a temporary roof.
  3. Battle of PragueThe gate suffered considerable damage during the battle.
  4. 1799Damaged decorations were removed as the tower decayed.
  5. 17th c.The tower stored gunpowder, giving it the name Powder Tower or Powder Gate.

  1. 1878–1886Josef Mocker led a neo-Gothic restoration that renewed much of the ornamentation and created the vaulted passage. The clock installed in the early 19th century was removed.
