History

Monet invited Metcalf and his three companions to lunch at his home. The establishment became known as “Hôtel des peintres américains” and welcomed painters including Cézanne, Renoir, Sisley and Mary Cassatt. Claude Monet used the garden studio for figure studies. The grounds eventually held three painters’ studios.

  1. 1886American painter Willard Leroy Metcalf first asked Angélina and Lucien Baudy for lodging. He returned with three painter friends, and Mme Baudy gave them lodging and meals. After word spread that Claude Monet lived nearby, artists and visitors began coming to the grocery and café.
  2. 1887A garden studio was built with a north-facing glass roof, providing steady natural light.
