History
During Bern’s youth revolt in the early 1980s, protesters called for alternative cultural venues.
- 1901–1904Architect Eduard Joos designed the power station, built to supplement the Mattequartier hydroelectric plant.
- 1939The station stopped using coal.
- 1973The station ceased operations.
- 1981After plans for a pool and sports centre were abandoned, the city planned to demolish the disused building. Heritage authorities intervened to save it for its industrial history.
- 1986The Dampfzentrale association was founded to secure the site as a cultural centre.
