History
The Engelberg name first referred to the monks’ wine and was later adopted by the inn. The restaurant occupies the surviving wing of a three-wing hotel built in the Heimatstil style.
- 1120Engelberg Monastery was founded in 1120; vineyards around Tüscherz-Wingreis later belonged to it.
- 1235Wingreis is recorded as “Vinea in Windgrabs”.
- 1970sRailway expansion and road construction removed most of the hotel and the former Engelberg estate. Excavated earth from the roadworks was used to create a large lawn for play and sunbathing, with a fire pit.
