Atmosphere
- At its December 1910 opening, the restaurant had three halls decorated in green and red, or red and black, with large Heimberger ceramics and colourful jugs.
- The restaurant is part of the Volkshaus, a building with halls, meeting rooms, a concert hall, a bar, a bookshop, a hammam and offices.
History
- Original rulesThe Volkshaus rules banned consuming and selling alcohol throughout the building. The restaurant serves alcohol today.
- 1910The restaurant opened as an alcohol-free venue run by the women's association. Its December opening banquet drew 300 invited guests.
- 1912The Zurich general strike was coordinated from the Volkshaus.
- 1918The low-priced restaurant had not become a regular gathering place for workers and reported a very poor annual result.
- 1942Customer numbers had fallen, and the women's association said guests preferred smaller rooms to the large hall.

- 1949The operator agreed to let the Ostjüdischen Frauenverein organise a kosher buffet, on condition it received 250 francs compensation.
- 1953The foundation's annual report described the restaurant's finances as secure, conditional on continued peace and employment.
