History
Its construction destroyed parts of the historic city, including Etruscan, Roman and medieval structures; other houses, streets, towers and courtyards were enclosed beneath its vaults. The fortress was later demolished, leaving underground spaces and above-ground remains. Restoration opened the underground remains in stages, with public access completed in 1965. The site’s large spaces host cultural events throughout the year.
- 1540–1543After the Baglioni family’s revolt against the pope, Pope Paul III ordered a fortress over their homes. Its construction destroyed Etruscan, Roman and medieval structures.
- 1848Uprisings partly destroyed the fortress.
- 1860–1861Pope Pius IX had the fortress rebuilt in 1860, when it still symbolised papal power. After Perugia joined the Kingdom of Italy, it was demolished in 1861.
- 19th centuryDemolition made room for Piazza Italia, Via Masi, Carducci Gardens and Viale Indipendenza.
- 1867The Palace of the Province and Prefecture was built over the fortress ruins.
