History

After Argentina’s centenary celebrations, Mayor Joaquín Anchorena wanted a rose garden inside the park. Carrasco proposed the plan in 1913, and the garden opened the following year. Later work added the Andalusian section and restored the garden’s plantings, buildings and fountains.

  1. 1913Landscape architect Benito Javier Carrasco proposed making a rose garden from the Bañados de Palermo marshland.
  2. 1914The plan was approved. Construction ran from 5 May to 22 November, reshaping the marsh into a pond and planting 14,650 roses in 1,189 varieties. The garden opened on 24 November.
  3. 1920–1929An Andalusian-style section was added, designed by Eugenio Carrasco and completed in 1929 with features donated by Seville’s city hall.
  4. 1994 and 2008Restorations replanted about 5,000 rose bushes, installed drip irrigation and restored buildings, monuments and five fountains.
  5. 2010The restored garden reopened in May.
