History

After Frederick’s death, Sanssouci stood mostly empty and neglected until the mid-19th century. It became a tourist attraction in East Germany after the war. Frederick’s library returned in 1992, followed by thirty-six oil paintings between 1993 and 1995.

  1. 10 August 1744Frederick ordered the south-facing slope to be made into vineyard terraces.
  2. 1745–1747Frederick supplied sketches, and Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff carried out the design. Jan Bouman completed the project after von Knobelsdorff’s dismissal in 1746.
  3. 1747The palace was inaugurated on 1 May, although some rooms were still unfinished.
  4. 1786Frederick died after using the palace each summer. That year, Frederick William von Erdmannsdorff remodelled the King’s study and bedroom.
  5. 1840–1842Frederick William IV and his wife moved into the guest rooms. He enlarged the service wings.
