History

The ornamental gardens also served productive purposes: the hedge quarter held 3,000 fruit trees, while greenhouses grew oranges, melons, peaches and bananas. Frederick William IV later expanded the gardens between Sanssouci Palace and the New Palace. The landscape combines a French pleasure garden with a 19th-century landscaped park and period buildings.

  1. 1743Frederick the Great planned the palace and wine-growing terraces and chose a grave site there.
  2. 1757The Neptune Grotto was completed in the eastern part of the park.
  3. 1760sGardener Joachim Ludwig Heydert laid out the Dutch Garden.
  4. 1764–1774The Picture Gallery was built in 1764, followed by the New Chambers in 1774.
  5. 1825Land was given to Frederick William IV. Charlottenhof Palace was later built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Ludwig Persius on a former farmhouse site. Peter Joseph Lenné turned flat, partly swampy ground into an open landscape garden.
Show all
  1. 1841–1843Ludwig Persius built the Moorish Revival Havelbucht pumping station.
  2. 1842After the original system failed to deliver water to the reservoir, steam power sent the Great Fountain’s jet 38 metres high in October.
