History
The complex grew through successive building campaigns, with its present structures expanded by 1650. In the early 19th century, the ruins became a symbol of Romanticism. J. M. W. Turner repeatedly painted Heidelberg and its castle during visits between 1817 and 1844, and railway access from 1840 helped bring more tourists.
- before 1214The earliest castle structure was built before 1214.
- 1303Records refer to two castles: an upper castle on Kleiner Gaisberg and a lower castle at the present site.
- 1537Lightning destroyed the upper castle.
- 1622Tilly’s forces captured Heidelberg and the castle.
- 1689French troops set fire to the castle and blew off the front of the Fat Tower.
