History
The 12th-century mention of Villa Hünigen refers to a settlement, not the present castle. The medieval water castle was destroyed by fire; the present castle later became a spa and hotel.
- 12th c.A settlement called Villa Hünigen was mentioned in a document by Pope Eugene III.
- 1501Hans Rudolf von Scharnachthal acquired the estate.
- 16th c.A fire destroyed the medieval water castle outside the village.
- 1588–1922The von May family owned the castle.
- 1922The Evangelisch Gesellschaft des Kantones Bern bought the castle and converted it into a spa and hotel.
