History
Schwartz’s remains at its original location and still uses its original recipe. Schwartz’s inspired the theatre production Schwartz’s: The Musical and features in the documentaries The Concert Man and Chez Schwartz.
- 1890s–1900sEastern European Jewish immigrants brought smoked meat sandwiches to Montreal.
- 1928Reuben Schwartz founded the deli after immigrating from Romania.
- 1971–1981Violinist and composer Maurice Zbriger became the sole owner and ran the deli until his death.
- 1977Under Bill 101, the sign changed from “Hebrew delicatessen” to “Charcuterie Hébraïque de Montréal”.
- 1981–1999Armande Toupin Chartrand inherited the deli after serving as Zbriger’s professional organizer and caretaker.

Tips for your visit
- Choose smoked meat by fat content: lean, medium, medium-fat or fat.
- For takeout, use the counter to the left of the entrance. It serves the same sandwiches and smoked meat, with a faster-moving queue.
- Expect a cramped dining room with wooden tables and customers sitting close together.
- The takeout menu includes pickles, peppers, mustard, coleslaw, olives, spices and bread.
