Seahorse World

The project initially aimed to farm seahorses for traditional Chinese medicine, then shifted to breeding them for the marine ornamental market. The farm began in a Beauty Point shed; its seahorses are now distributed internationally.

1. UndatedThe attraction grew from University of Tasmania research into the life cycle of Tasmania’s Pot Bellied Seahorse. Rachelle Hawkins was the project’s senior biologist.
2. UndatedA commercial seahorse breeding project called Seahorse Australia began.
3. UndatedA study examined a tourism venture alongside the breeding project.
4. Since 1999Seahorse World has welcomed more than half a million visitors to northern Tasmania since 1999.
5. 2010Craig and Rachelle Hawkins purchased the attraction.
