History

The Enchanted Forest was designed as a place seen through children’s eyes. The park’s Skyride linked Rootin’ Tootin’ and Dream Street. Savannah Sunset’s opening was followed by the naming of the full complex as Six Flags Great Adventure Resort.

  1. 1964–1965The Skyride used a double skyway that had operated at the New York World’s Fair.
  2. 1972Restaurateur Warner LeRoy planned a seven-part leisure complex, including an amusement park, safari, exhibition park, flower park, sports complex, campground and shopping area.
  3. 1974The Enchanted Forest and Safari Park opened on July 1. The July 4 celebration included Runaway Mine Train’s opening. The Garden of Marvels had models of American landmarks and European castles, with working miniature trains and boats.
  4. 1977Six Flags acquired the park, which took its current name.
  5. 1984A Haunted Castle fire killed eight teenagers and prompted new fire-safety laws for amusement attractions.
