History
It passed to the Stricklands in 1239 through a marriage, and Edward III granted permission for a private park in 1336. The castle grew with a hall and two wings around 1450, followed by Elizabethan extensions and a Georgian enlargement of the great hall. The Stricklands gave the estate to the National Trust in 1950, while retaining their family home. The Inlaid Chamber panelling returned on long-term loan in 1999.

- 1239Elizabeth Deincourt’s marriage to Sir William de Stirkeland brought the estate to the Strickland family.
