History
After a trip to Dalarna, the founder Artur Hazelius feared that older Swedish folk culture would be lost. He opened the museum to show Swedish ways of life before industrialisation. The museum began as part of the Nordic Museum before it became independent. The park also helped save some species, notably the bison. Its herd grew from one animal, and the first calf was born in 1918.
- 1872Artur Hazelius made a collecting trip and came back with objects, folk memories and literature.
- 1891Artur Hazelius opened the museum to the public on 11 October 1891.
- 1897The first funicular in Sweden opened here during an exhibition.
- 1910The bison herd began with one animal acquired this year.
- 1963The museum became an independent organisation, separate from the Nordic Museum.
