History

Erected by the Soviet Union a few months after Berlin’s capture, the memorial especially commemorates roughly 80,000 Soviet soldiers killed in the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945. All Allied Powers supported its construction. Lev Kerbel and Vladimir Tsigal sculpted the soldier monument. Soviet troops guarded the site during Berlin’s partition, although it stood in the British sector.

  1. 11 November 1945Allied troops inaugurated the memorial with a parade.
  2. 22 December 1990Soviet guards left the memorial, and the complex was transferred to the city of Berlin.
  3. 1992Germany committed to protecting the memorial permanently under an agreement with Russia.
  4. Mid-1990s and 2014Restoration work reanchored the bronze soldier, repaired the weapons, and regilded inscriptions and emblems.
