History
Much of the castle’s present layout dates from its conversion into a prison in the 1830s. Renovations from 1987 to 1992 sought to restore its late-18th-century appearance. The main courtyard hosts Letní shakespearovské slavnosti in July and early August. Concerts are also regularly held there during summer.
- 13th c.Špilberk began as a royal residence and defensive fortress protecting Brno.
- Mid-14th c.It became the permanent seat of the Moravian margraves under Jan Jindřich.
- 1560The castle passed to the city of Brno and became a municipal fortress.
- 1742Casemates were built into the side ditches.
- 1783Joseph II ordered part of the castle converted into a prison.

- 1809Napoleonic forces destroyed important fortifications.
- 1820The whole fortress became a civilian prison.
- 1822Silvio Pellico was imprisoned here; his memoir, published in 1832, made the prison known across Europe.
- 1855The civilian prison was abolished.
- 1858The last prisoners left, and the buildings became barracks.
- 1880The casemates and lookout tower opened to the public.
- 1914–1918Civilian objectors and military prisoners were held here.
- Early Nazi occupationSeveral thousand Czech patriots were imprisoned here; some were executed.
- 1959The army left, ending the castle’s military role.
- 1960The castle became the seat of the Brno City Museum.
- 1962The castle and surrounding park were declared a national cultural monument.
- 2025–2026After reconstruction, the north wing’s ground floor reopened in a new form on 16 August 2026.
