History

Parts of an early 13th-century predecessor survive in the standing masonry. A 1929 excavation revealed that the earlier Romanesque church was a smaller three-aisled basilica. Andreas Osiander later served here as a preacher.

  3. 1525St Lorenz became Evangelical Lutheran, among Germany’s earliest churches to do so; wealthy citizens kept its donated artworks in place.
  4. 1949Reconstruction began after wartime bombing severely damaged the roofs and vaults.
  5. 1952The restored church held its first service on Laurentiustag, Saint Lawrence’s feast day.
