History
Later, tide-adjusting pontoons also served fast steamers on routes to North Sea destinations. Modernization begun in 1999 redesigned the roof covering and lighting and replaced Bridge 7.
- 1839The first wooden landing stage was built to supply coal to steamships and serve overseas steamers.
- 1869–1871An expansion added eight iron pontoons that adjusted to the harbour tide. They served fast steamers on routes to Cuxhaven, Helgoland, Norderney and Sylt.
- 1907–1909Raabe & Wöhlecke designed the present landing stage and a tuff-stone passenger clearance building as a representative ship station. Arthur Bock created its sculptural decorations.
- 1953–1955After the old piers were destroyed in the Second World War, the pontoons were rebuilt.
- 1976A section between bridges 2 and 3 was rebuilt after wartime destruction.
