History

Charles IV meant the new Gothic cathedral to be a coronation church, a family crypt and a treasury for the kingdom's relics. Matthias of Arras was the first master builder of the Gothic cathedral, begun on 21 November 1344. Work then halted during the Hussite wars, and a fire in 1541 destroyed the unfinished western part. In 2011 the state funeral of Václav Havel was held here, the first state funeral since 1875.
