History

Indigenous peoples used the land for thousands of years before British colonization. The village of Whoi Whoi, or X̱wáýx̱way, stood where Lumberman’s Arch is now. Its longhouses housed extended families and hosted ceremonial potlatches. Many park structures were built between 1911 and 1938 under superintendent W.S. Rawlings. Most present-day trails began as skid roads used by logging companies.

  1. 1791–1792Spanish captain José María Narváez explored the peninsula in 1791, followed by British captain George Vancouver in 1792.
  2. 1886After Vancouver incorporated, the city made the land its first park.
  3. 1888Stanley Park officially opened on September 27. It was named for Governor General Lord Stanley.
  4. 1916A road causeway divided a sea inlet to create Lost Lagoon. Thomas Mawson designed the lagoon and causeway.
  5. 1917Work began on the seawall and walkway, and continued for decades. Mason James “Jimmy” Cunningham worked on it from 1931 until 1963.

  1. By 1926The causeway and new emergency-access roads were complete. Previously, a wooden footbridge had been the only route into the park from Coal Harbour.
  2. 1988Stanley Park was designated a National Historic Site of Canada for its natural and cultural elements.
  3. 2006The December 15 windstorm affected about 40 percent of the forest and brought down an estimated 10,000 trees.
