History

The Opera House stands on Tubowgule, the land of the Gadigal, traditional custodians. The project grew from Eugène Goossens’s campaign for a venue for major theatre and music productions. The Fort Macquarie Tram Depot was demolished in 1958 to make way for it. The final cost was A$102 million, against an initial A$7 million estimate in 1957.

  1. 1955The international design competition launched on 13 September and attracted 233 entries from 32 countries.
  2. 1957The jury announced Jørn Utzon as the competition winner on 29 January.
  3. 1958Work began under Premier Joseph Cahill, with Utzon directing construction.
  4. 1960Paul Robeson performed for construction workers in the unfinished building.
  5. 1966Utzon resigned; Peter Hall took over much of the interior design.
