History

It was built in the Belle Époque, when rubber fortunes paid for it. A local deputy first proposed it as a jewel in the heart of the rainforest. Work stopped and restarted for years, and funding debates held it up. Masonry and the exterior were finished by 1895, so the interior work could begin. After the rubber price crash, its performances stopped for a time. The building was then fully restored, and it has been restored four times since it opened.
