History

King Ludwig II was fascinated by the mountain scenery during his visits. South Tyrolean firm Hölzl Seilbahnbau built the cableway.

  1. 2nd centuryThe bathhouse at the Roman settlement Tegelberg dates to the 2nd century. Both Roman buildings contained well-preserved painted frescoes.
  2. 1934–35The Roman settlement Tegelberg was first documented.
  3. 1996Schwangau built a protective structure over the preserved bathhouse. Some frescoes from the complex are now displayed at the Archäologische Staatssammlung in Munich.
  4. 2011On 12 August, a tandem paraglider became caught in the cables, stopping service. Thirty passengers were lowered about 50 metres from the lower cabin, and 132 people were flown down from the mountain station. Strong winds delayed the helicopter evacuation of the upper cabin’s 19 passengers and the operator until 13 August.
  5. 2019–2021The stations were modernised from 2019 to 2021. The green-and-white cabins, used from 1988 until spring 2021, were replaced by nearly fully glazed Carvatech cabins.

  1. 2024One former cabin was moved to Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte in Regensburg.
  2. 2025A fire destroyed an outbuilding at the valley station, but the cableway was undamaged. Service resumed after one day.
