History
Temppeliaukio is a parish church close to the city centre. Ideas for a church on the rock hill took shape in the 1930s, and J. S. Construction was then abandoned because of the wars. Economic conditions held back building until 1968. A court fined the painters in 1969.
- 1906The rocky site was set aside for a church in the first plan of the area.
- 1936J. S. Sirén won the second architecture competition.
- 1939Excavation began in November; the Winter War stopped it after a few days.
- 1961The third architecture competition was won by the Suomalainen brothers with the entry Kivikirkko.
- 1968Construction began in February; in July students painted BIAFRA on the unfinished building as a protest.
