History

T. Andrews. As the railway's flagship hotel, it was run directly by the railway company. Its ownership passed to the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923. The new name honours a wartime station foreman, who was killed in the Baedeker Blitz in 1942.

  1. 1853The first Station Hotel opened beside the old station, designed by G. T. Andrews.
  2. 1854Queen Victoria visited, and the hotel was renamed the Royal Station Hotel.
  3. 20 May 1878The second Royal Station Hotel opened as part of the new station, designed by William Peachey of the North Eastern Railway.
  4. 1896A west wing was added, nicknamed the Klondyke after the gold rush.
  5. 29 April 1942A wartime station foreman, later the namesake of the hotel, was killed in the Baedeker Blitz while fetching first aid supplies.
