History

Nuremberg’s zoo tradition is traced to the Middle Ages through place names recalling an animal park maintained by the Burgraves. The modern zoo opened at Luitpoldhain in 1912, then moved to Schmausenbuck in 1939. After near-total wartime destruction, the zoo was rebuilt in the 1950s.

  1. Middle AgesTiergärtnertor and Tiergärtnertorplatz are the only indications of an animal park maintained by Nuremberg’s Burgraves. Its preserve extended to areas now called St. Johannis and Klinikum Nord.
  2. 1912The zoo opened at Luitpoldhain on 11 May, on the site of the Bavarian State Exhibition. Its landscape design followed Hamburg’s Hagenbeck zoo.
  3. 1939The Luitpoldhain zoo closed in February to make way for the expansion of the Nazi party rally grounds. The current zoo opened at Schmausenbuck in May.
  4. 1950sThe zoo was almost entirely destroyed after World War II. Rebuilding began in 1950 under director Alfred Seitz and was completed by the late 1950s.
  5. 1971The dolphinarium opened on 13 August with a public performance area.
